Recognizing Happiness

Define happiness:
Will you be happy when you are successful?
Or are you successful because you are happy?

Happiness doesn’t come as a result of getting something we don’t have,
but rather of recognizing and appreciating what we do have.

Frederick Koenig

Read that again. And again. Drill that into your heart and brain. You are deferring your happiness when you say that you will be happy WHEN you get that promotion, WHEN you get that raise, WHEN you have saved enough to quit your job and start your dream business, WHEN the kids are older… You are lying to yourself each time. Each time you reach one of the WHENs you set for yourself. you will have defined yet another future goal that you decide you must reach before you can be happy.

The only way to be happy is to decide to be happy. With what you have, with where you are. You only have this moment right now, you aren’t promised a tomorrow, or even another hour, so appreciate this moment you have now, and be happy in it. Have gratitude and appreciate all the wonderful people and things in your life right this very moment. Being happy doesn’t mean everything around you is perfect. It just means you have decided to look beyond the imperfections, and appreciate what is.

Most folks are about as happy as they make up their minds to be.

Abraham Lincoln

Don’t stop pursing your goals, your dream job, your book. But don’t postpone your happiness for some future event. Celebrate and enjoy each step you take to get there, and you will be successful and happy NOW, not WHEN.

Happiness is the meaning and the purpose of life, the whole aim and end of human existence.

  • I think it’s the gift that arises from the struggle. When we know what darkness and despair look like, then we know what happiness looks like, as well. So many that I’ve known have everything they ever needed or wanted, but can’t even see that they are happy. They keep searching for something that they already have. The ability to recognize happiness, glory in it, hold it to us and squeeze it all it’s worth–that’s what makes all the struggling mean something.

  • YES YES YES! Happiness doesn’t come from the outside, it comes from the inside.

I know plenty of successful people that aren’t happy because it is not the job, the salary, the corner office that makes us happy. But when we are truly happy, happy from the inside-out, success comes more easily because we are attractive to others and people want to help us succeed.

And if I can’t be happy with what I have today, then I won’t be happy with what comes tomorrow.

Thanks for sharing this wonderful message!

if I can’t be happy with what I have today, then I won’t be happy with what comes tomorrow.
